Exclusive designs, beautiful patterns and artistic masterpiece, hand block printing has the capability of stylizing a plain cloth material with vibrancy. Though, a slow process to carry out; the results are outstanding as the wooden blocks are used on the linen, silk and cotton fabrics. In fact, the magic of shapes is imprinted on fabrics to make them look artistic. The blocks that are used in this printing technology are made from lime, pear wood, holly and even sycamore. The size of these blocks may vary as per requirements; but, the thickness has to be around two to three inch. There are numerous pieces of blocks that are joined and glued under heavy pressure to make it one piece ready for printing.
An Inquisitive and Amusing Process-
To start the hand block printing, the fabric is thoroughly washed beforehand. In order to have more stunning style tie or dye printing is carried out before proceeding for the block printing process. After tie and dye the fabric is again washed to remove excess of dye or color. Followed by this, the fabric is being stretched on the printing table and fixed with pins around all the four edges to keep away wrinkles. There is a necessity to pin the edges properly because slightest of crinkle can disturb the hand block printing process. As the fabric is fastened; the pigment dyes are used to create floral, geometric, birds or animal designs on the fabric.
The design on the block to be used is, generally, hard carved by the block maker. As the blocks are made, they are allowed to be soaked in oil for 10-15 days for softening their edges. Then, the printing process takes place that starts from left and goes towards right. The required color or colors are taken in a salver and as a part of process, color is evened in a tray, block is dipped in it and dabbed on sponge to remove any excess color. The block is then slammed hard on the fabric to give a wonderful impression. In terms of multiple colored hand block printing, the printer would dip other block in separate color, make a point on the fabric and print it with perfection. This is the reason that hand block printing process is rigorous and slow.
On completion of printing process, the fabric is dried in the sun. Further to this, the fabrics are rolled in newspaper and steamed in boilers. Finally, the fabric is ironed properly to fix the color permanently and create a masterpiece design. With so much perfection, it is necessary for the design makers to pay attention as slightest of negligence can mar the symmetry of the entire print.
